Dementia & My Swim
This summer, I’m taking on one of Aotearoa’s toughest endurance swimming feats — a solo 40.2km endurance swim of the length of Lake Taupō / Taupō–nui–a–Tia, New Zealand.
I’ll be swimming it unassisted under official marathon swimming rules:
-
Wearing only togs, cap, and goggles (no wetsuit)
-
No touching the support boats
-
No drafting
-
Continuous, non-stop swimming until I reach the other side
Two boats will accompany me as pilot, safety and feeding support, but every metre of the swim is powered by me alone — stroke after stroke, hour after hour, after hour, after hour ... I think it could take between 14–16 hours depending on weather, conditions, and pace.
This is a physical and mental test of endurance, resilience, and purpose. But, very importantly, this swim is also a way of recognising the effect that Dementia has on tens of thousands of New Zealanders - not just individuals, but whānau, caregivers and communities.
This swim is my way of saying: we see you, we support you, and I'm swimming for you.
It's a chance to ignite conversation, honour loved ones and highlight the importance of awareness, early support and compassion.
I'd love for you to follow along and see how you can support (handy tip - scroll down to see a couple of simple, meaningful ways to join in)
Fingers crossed for sunny weather and calm waters.
